little-endian
<data, architecture> A computer architecture in which, within a given 16- or 32-bit word, bytes at lower addresses have lower significance (the word is stored "little-end-first"). The PDP-11 and VAX families of computers and Intel microprocessors and a lot of communications and networking hardware are little-endian. The term is sometimes used to describe the ordering of units other than bytes; most often, bits within a byte. Compare big-endian, middle-endian. See NUXI problem. [Jargon File] (1995-08-16)
bi-endian
Silicon schizophrenia. Processors and other chips that have can be switched to work in big-endian or little-endian mode. The PowerPC chip has this ability, which allows it to run the little-endian Windows NT, or the big-endian Mac OS/PPC. (1995-02-23)
big-endian
1. <data, architecture> A computer architecture in which, within a given multi-byte numeric representation, the most significant byte has the lowest address (the word is stored "big-end-first"). Most processors, including the IBM 370 family, the PDP-10, the Motorola microprocessor families, and most of the various RISC designs current in mid-1993, are big-endian. See -endian. 2. <networking, standard> A backward {electronic mail address}. The world now follows the Internet hostname standard (see FQDN) and writes e-mail addresses starting with the name of the computer and ending up with the {country code} (e.g. fred@doc.acme.ac.uk). In the United Kingdom the Joint Networking Team decided to do it the other way round (e.g. me@uk.ac.wigan.cs) before the Internet domain standard was established. Most gateway sites required ad-hockery in their mailers to handle this. By July 1994 this parochial idiosyncracy was on the way out and mailers started to reject big-endian addresses. By about 1996, people would look at you strangely if you suggested such a bizarre thing might ever have existed. [Jargon File] (1998-08-09)

Endianness

In computing, endianness is the order or sequence of bytes of a word of digital data in computer memory. Endianness is primarily expressed as big-endian (BE) or little-endian (LE). A big-endian system stores the most significant byte of a word at the smallest memory address and the least significant byte at the largest. A little-endian system, in contrast, stores the least-significant byte at the smallest address. Bi-endianness is a feature supported by numerous computer architectures that feature switchable endianness in data fetches and stores or for instruction fetches. Other orderings are generically called middle-endian or mixed-endian.

Endianness may also be used to describe the order in which the bits are transmitted over a communication channel, e.g., big-endian in a communications channel transmits the most significant bits first. Bit-endianness is seldom used in other contexts.

1. Although he called it "unutterably trivial", he also described it as "one of the most extraordinary stories I came upon while researching this book" adding: "So many jaw–dropping stories have emerged of the way in which his household is run that it can sound credible." The Prince of Wales‘s office yesterday declined to offer any further insight into his egg–eating habits, even whether he knocks the big end or the little end off – a subject of such bitter debate over centuries that in Jonathan Swift‘s Gulliver‘s Travels it sparks a savage war between the big–endian Blefuscudians and the little–endian Lilliputians.
